How AI research is enabling next-gen codecs

Data compression has increased by leaps and bounds over the years due to technical innovation, enabling the proliferation of streamed digital multimedia and voice over IP. For example, a regular cadence of technical advancement in video codecs has led to massive reduction in file size – in fact, up to a 1000x reduction in file size when comparing a raw video file to a VVC encoded file. However, with the rise of machine learning techniques and diverse data types to compress, AI may be a compelling tool for next-generation compression, offering a variety of benefits over traditional techniques. In this webinar we’ll discuss:

Taco Cohen is a machine learning researcher at Qualcomm AI Research in Amsterdam. He was a co-founder of Scyfer, a company focused on active deep learning, acquired by Qualcomm in 2017. He holds a BSc in theoretical computer science from Utrecht University and a MSc in artificial intelligence from the University of Amsterdam (both cum laude). He is finishing his PhD in machine learning at the University of Amsterdam, under the supervision of prof. Max Welling. His research is focused on deep-learning based source compression, as well as equivariant networks, data-efficient deep learning, and learning on non-Euclidean domains. He has done internships at Google DeepMind (working with Geoff Hinton) and OpenAI. He received the 2014 University of Amsterdam thesis prize, a Google PhD Fellowship, ICLR 2018 best paper award for “Spherical CNNs”, and was named one of 35 innovators under 35 in Europe by MIT in 2018.
